What is Dual Enrollment?
When it comes to college, there is a lot of planning and preparation for high school students to stay on top of. From enrolling in the best college-prep courses, test prep, and college applications, you're probably wondering how to jumpstart the college experience. Dual enrollment opens many doors, offering a head start on higher education while still in high school.
Dual enrollment is a unique educational opportunity that allows high school students to enroll in college-level courses while still attending high school. It offers a bridge between secondary and postsecondary education, giving students a taste of college life and academics before officially starting their higher education journey. Students can earn high school and college credits at the same time.
Career and College Promise
Career and College Promise (CCP) allows eligible high school students to take college courses tuition-free, earning both high school and college credits simultaneously. At the college level, these credits can be applied to college certificates and degrees or provide relevant entry-level job skills and preparation. This opportunity allows students to accelerate their college education while reducing the cost of tuition. Classes are taught on the college
campus and offered online.
There are three pathways available to high school students:
College Transfer (CT) Pathway
For students planning to continue their education beyond high school to achieve an Associate鈥檚 or Bachelor鈥檚 degree at a community college or university.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathway
For students to begin a certification or diploma program in a specific career or technical area.
Cooperative Innovative High School (CIHS) Pathway
For students at Middle College High School, City of Medicine Academy, and 麻豆影视 School of Technology.

- Tuition and Fees
Tuition is waived for credit courses during the fall, spring, and summer semesters by the state of North Carolina. Students are responsible for course fees. View course fees for College Transfer or for Career and Technical Education courses.
- Textbooks
Textbook costs are the responsibility of the student unless otherwise covered by the school district. Check with your school for details. For more information, visit the website for the Career and College Promise program.
The Advantages of Dual Enrollment
Dual enrollment has several benefits, making it a good choice for many students.
- Cost-Effective: Dual enrollment offers significant cost savings by allowing students to earn college credits with a tuition waiver, meaning they pay a fraction of traditional college fees for eligible courses.
- Accelerated Education: By taking college-level courses in high school, students can accelerate their path towards a post-education degree, potentially graduating early.
- Pathway to Post-High School Learning: Dual enrollment provides a seamless path to university or other higher learning institutions, giving students a competitive edge in college admissions.
What Dual Enrollment Classes Should I Take?
Choosing the right dual enrollment classes is crucial for maximizing the benefits of this program. When selecting courses, consider your academic interests, career goals, and college requirements. Whether you're interested in STEM, humanities, or business, a wide range of options are available to suit your needs. For instance, a student who has taken every math class offered by their high school might take advanced mathematics courses. Other students prefer to begin taking courses required in college, such as introductory English or an Art History course, to explore a new subject. Contact your high school counselor or college advisor to explore the best course options.
